Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis novel The Graveyard Book karya Neil Gaiman sebagai bildungsroman gotik dengan menggunakan teori naratif. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori struktur naratif milik Monika Fludernik (2009) dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian diperoleh dari novel The Graveyard Book karya Neil Gaiman. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa novel ini menggunakan sudut pandang orang ketiga pengamat, serta urutan peristiwa yang terjadi di The Graveyard Book bersifat kronologis dan menyajikan beberapa elemen narasi Bildungsroman. Narator dan fokaliser pada novel ini berfokus pada karakter utama, sehingga memungkinkan pembaca untuk mengamati tindakan, pikiran, dan emosi, serta memahami motif tindakan yang dilakukan karakter tersebut. Unsur-unsur gotik yang dihadirkan sepanjang narasi menjadi bagian penting dari konflik utama dan motif karakter utama menjalani pendidikan mandirinya. Pembentukan karakter utama diperoleh melalui kepergiannya dari dunia arwah menuju dunia hidup setelah melakukan pembalasan dendam pada pembunuh keluarganya. Dengan demikian, buku The Graveyard dapat disimpulkan sebagai bildungsroman gotik dilihat dari segi narasinya. *********** This research aims to analyze Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book as a gothic bildungsroman using narrative theory. The study employs Monika Fludernik (2009)’s theory of narrative structure with a qualitative-descriptive method. The data used is taken from the novel The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Based on the findings and discussion, the novel employs a third-person, covert narrator in its narrative; the focalization thus relies on the reflector figure and the omniscient narrator. The analysis of the plot suggests that the sequence of the events happened in The Graveyard Book are presented chronologically and contained several elements of Bildungsroman narrative. The narrator is focused to the main character as the main focalizer, thus enabling the reader to observe his actions, thoughts, and emotions from his position and understand his motives for the actions. Gothic tropes and elements which are presented throughout the narrative become a major part of the main conflict and the motive of the main character to undergo self-education. The formation of the main character is obtained through his departure into the world of the living after enacting his revenge on his family’s murderer. Thus, The Graveyard book can be concluded as a gothic bildungsroman seen from its narrative perspective.
