Abstract

Teaching media has an important role in learning process, as well as in french language acquisition at Institut Français Indonesia in Jakarta. This institution provides some classes for kids to study French on the weekend. Then as we know, indeed choosing a good and suitable media for children is quite important in language teaching. So, this study will describe the use of audiovisual media in French learning process especially for children at Institut Français Indonesia. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative and aims to describe the use of audiovisual media in French classes for children aged 6-12 years and to see the differences in their learning outcomes of speaking French. The research was conducted in French class for children at Institut Français Indonesia every weekend starts from 13.30 until 17.00 through observation and documentation. The participants in this research were 9 kids with an age range of 6 to 12 years. First, the researcher observed the situation in the classroom without application of audio-visual media. Then two meetings were planned with the aid of various audio-visual media. The next step is to compare the class situation and the result of speaking test without audiovisual media and another two with various audio- visual media. The result of this research shows that the students are more enthusiasticon every single activity supported by audiovisual media. They have no more attention span in the classroom and become more creatives at the classroom with the use of the audiovisual media such as interactive videos, interactive flashcards, interactive exercises with various song and images and the final tasks by using their imagination during learning process at the classroom. At their final speaking test, every student shows some improvements on their speaking ability with the better pronunciation and grammar, richer vocabulary and self-confidence.
