Abstract

Penelitian ini fokus dalam menguji konstruksi identitas gender dalam tokoh utama transseksual, Andrew, pada novel If I was Your Girl oleh Meredith Russo. Melalui metode deskriptif analisis, teori performatifitas gender oleh Judith Butler digunakan untuk mengungkap bagaimana identitas gender dikonstruksi. Konsep-konsep homoseksualitas oleh Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick juga digunakan dalam menganalisa fase dari krisis identitas gender. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ibu dari Andrew menyabotase tindakan ayah dalam mengonstruksi maskulinitas. Tindakan yang dilakukan berulang-ulang oleh ibu berperan besar dalam mengonstruksi Andrew menjadi feminin dan menampilkan sifat feminin. Keterlibatan Andrew dengan sifat feminin mempengaruhinya terhadap homosocial desire sebagaimana ketertarikan seksualnya pada Markus. Ketertarikan seksual terhadap sesama jenis melanggar heteronormatifitas yang mengakibatkan Andrew mengalami homosexual panic karena adanya perundungan oleh fobia homoseksual. Akhirnya Andrew menemukan identitas gender yang sesungguhnya sebagai perempuan bernama Amanda dan menjalani terapi hormon. Amanda comes out sebagai transseksual dan kemudian diterima oleh masyarakat. This study focuses on examining gender identity construction of the main transsexual character, Andrew, in Meredith Russo’s If I was Your Girl. Through the use of descriptive analytical method, Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory is applied to reveal how gender identity is constructed. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s concepts of homosexuality are also used to analyze the phase of gender identity crisis. The results of this study show that Andrew’s mother sabotages the father’s action in constructing masculinity. His mother’s repeated actions have great influences in constructing Andrew to be feminine and to perform femininity. Andrew’s engagement with femininity leads him to experience homosocial desire as he is sexually attracted to Marcus. The sexual attraction towards same-sex member violates heteronormativity which results him to experience homosexual panic due to the bullying by the homophobic. Andrew finally finds his truest gender identity as a girl named Amanda and undergoes hormones therapy. She comes out as a transsexual and later she is accepted by the society.
