Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relevance of English reading materials given in the classroom to the students’ needs of reading for vocational school students majoring in Automotive (Teknik Kendaraan Ringan). This study used sample which involved 338 Teknik Kendaraan Ringan students, 15 English teachers who taught in Teknik Kendaraan Ringan classroom in vocational school in Jakarta, and also 10 practitioners. The methodology used in this study is case study by employing three instruments; questionnaire, interview, and document analysis. The findings of this study shows that the reading materials that were conducted in Teknik Kendaraan Ringan were not completely relevant to the reading students’ needs in the workplaces, as the English reading materials provided and mostly given by the teachers are meant to meet the students’ needs only to face the school examination and national examination, not that they may face in the future workplaces. Therefore, the need analysis is very crucial to be conducted in each class of Teknik Kendaraan Ringan in vocational school to help the teachers understand about the kinds of materials needed by the students for their future work, which is the materials that related to the major and and the kinds of activities to deliver those materials.
