Abstract

Edgar Allan Poe adalah seorang pujangga dari Amerika yang dianggap sebagai salah satu pujangga terbaik di dalam sejarah Amerika. Penguasaan penggunaan bahasa dan teknik yang brilian di dalam karyanya, dan juga sebagai pencipta aliran literatur horor dan fiksi detektif inilah yang menginspirasi penulis untuk menganalisis karya-karyanya. Tema khas di dalam karya-karyanya adalah cinta dan kematian, dimana ini menjadi alasan penulis untuk menganalisis penggambaran depresi dalam puisi-puisi Edgar Allan Poe. Untuk menemukan dan menganalisisnya, penelitian ini menggunakan metode descriptive analytical untuk menguak fakta dengan interpretasi yang pantas, dan juga menggunakan teori semiotik dari Roland Barthes yang terdiri dari definisi makna denotatif dan konotatif yang akan digunakan untuk menemukan gambaran depresi dalam puisi- puisi Edgar Allan Poe. Lalu, penulis juga menggunakan teori depresi dari Aaron Beck untuk menganalisis gejala-gejala depresi dan jenis-jenis depresi yang digambarkan dalam puisi-puisi tersebut. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa segitiga kognitif negative view towards experiences of surrounding environment muncul dengan jumlah terbanyak di dalam puisi-puisi tersebut. Dan puisi-puisi tersebut juga menunjukkan bahwa gejala affective symptom, cognitive symptom, dan motivational symptom muncul sebagai gejala-gejala depresi di dalam puisi- puisi tersebut. Kemudian, puisi-puisi yang telah dianalisis ini menunjukkan jenis sociotropic sebagai jenis depresi. Edgar Allan Poe is a poet from America which stands as one of the best poets in the history of America. Poe’s brilliant command of language and technique within his works, and being the originator of horror and detective fiction genre of literature, is what that inspired the writer to analyze his works. The iconic themes within his works are love and death, where it can be considered as the reason for the writer to analyze the portrayal of depression in Edgar Allan Poes’ poems. In order to find and analyze the portrayal of depression, this study uses descriptive analytical method to uncover the fact with suitable interpretation, and also uses Roland Barthes’ semiotics theory that consists of the definition of denotative and connotative meaning which are used to find the portrayal of depression in Edgar Allan Poe’s poems. Also, the writer uses Aaron Beck’s theory of depression to analyze the symptoms of depression and types of depression portrayed in Edgar Allan Poe’s poems. The result of this study shows that the negative cognitive triad of negative view towards experiences of surrounding environment made the most appearances in those poems. And those poems also shows that affective symptom, cognitive symptom, and motivational symptom as the symptoms of depression that is contained within those poems. And then, these analyzed poems shows the sociotropic as the types of depression.
