Abstract

The research reported in this paper is based on an exploration of the ways in which a novice teacher designed the lesson plans as compared with the propositions of the principles of developing a lesson plan by pedagogical scholars: Harmer (2007), Jensen (2001), Kurikulum 2013 (2016,2020), Krulatz (2014), and the European Profiling Grid (2011). The study employed a descriptive qualitative research method in order to summarize the data in the form of documents. Six lesson plans designed by a novice teacher of SMKN 1 Jakarta were analyzed. The results indicate that although operational verbs are used in the statement of objectives, only 42% out of 31 are specific and measurable. The teacher also did not conduct any survey to assess students’ needs prior to deciding the lesson objectives because of the unfamiliarity to such procedure. In addition, in terms of teaching and learning procedure, it is found that all of the lesson plans are coherent, meaning that they are divided into three stages and unified by a common theme throughout the meetings, and the student-teacher interactions are described in details as to who does what first and how. Also, 66% of the lesson plans employ more than one activity in the teaching and learning procedure. The findings conclude that the lesson plans are not relevant with the principles of developing the statement of objectives. Meanwhile, they are pertinent with the principles of developing the teaching and learning procedure
