Abstract

This study is on deixis theory of a letter written in January 1900 by one of Indonesian heroine, Kartini, to one of her Dutch pen pal, Stella Zeehandelaar. It is purposed to elaborate how the deictic expressions found in Kartini’s letter to Stella Zeehandelaar in January 1900 reveal the interpretation of meaning in the letter by considering the context. The data were taken from the utterances that contain deictic expression in a form of phrase or word used in the letter. This study applied a descriptive-qualitative interpretative research and investigated by deixis theory proposed by Stephen Levinson (1983). The result of this study conveys that all types of deixis (person, place, time, social, discourse) used in the letter with 821 occurrences. Moreover, Kartini highly used person deixis (54%), social deixis (17%), and discourse deixis (14%), followed by time deixis (8%), and the lowest use is place deixis (7%). Further, the findings can be inferred that in person deixis, Kartini mostly used pronoun ”I” to convey the meaning that in the entire of the letter, she mostly talked about the circumstances of her life and experiences. In social deixis, Kartini used the word “Government” to give the notion that Kartini suggested the role and relation between the ruler and civilians. While the last dominant use is discourse deixis, that is used to resist and as the continuation of the former discourse by using word “but”. Using deixis in Kartini’s letter to Stella Zeehandelaar in January 1900 is not only pointing the reference but could also uncover the genuine meaning related to person, social relation, discourse, location and time in the context.
