Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui latar belakang pembangunan jalur kereta api di Batavia – Bandung lintas Karawang, Purwakarta, dan Padalarang dari dimulainya proyek pembangunan pada tahun 1884 sampai zaman awal kedatangan Jepang di Indonesia pada tahun 1942. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode sejarah atau historis yang disajikan dalam bentuk deskriptif naratif. Adapun pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini didapat dari arsip, buku, jurnal, dan skripsi yang berkaitan dengan topik penelitian. Hasil dari penelitian skripsi ini yaitu bahwa pembangunan jalur kereta api Batavia – Bandung dibangun oleh perusahaan kereta api milik negara Staatsspoorwegen (SS) yang diresmikan pada tahun 1906. Pembangunan jalur kereta api Batavia – Bandung ini dilatarbelakangi dengan dua alasan kepentingan utama yaitu ekonomi dan pertahanan. Awal pembangunan jalur kereta api ini dilakukan secara bertahap mulai dari pengambilan alih jalur Batavia – Karawang oleh Staatsspoorwegen dari sebuah perusahaan swasta Bataviasche Ooster Spoorweg Maatschappij (BOS), kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pembangunan jalur kereta api dari Karawang hingga ke Padalarang. Dengan dioperasikannya jalur Batavia – Bandung lintas Karawang – Padalarang membuat waktu tempuh pun menjadi lebih singkat dan meningkatkan potensi ekonomi masyarakat di sekitar jalur tersebut. Hal ini sejalan dengan tujuan pembangunan kereta api oleh perusahaan negara Staatsspoorwegen yaitu untuk mensejahterakan penduduk. Namun kedatangan Jepang ke Indonesia pada tahun 1942 membuat banyak hal-hal dibidang perkeretaapian diubah. Dengan demikian berakhirlah kekuasaan kolonial Belanda di Indonesia. ***** This research aims to determine the background of the construction of the railway line on the Batavia – Bandung route across Karawang, Purwakarta, and Padalarang from the start of the construction project in 1884 until the arrival of Japan in Indonesia in 1942. The study method used by the author in this study is a historical which is presented in a descriptive-narrative form. The data collection in this research was obtained from archives, books, journals, and theses related to the research topic. The result of this research is the construction of the Batavia - Bandung railway line which was built by the state-owned railway company Staatsspoorwegen (SS) and was inaugurated in 1906. The construction of the Batavia - Bandung railway line was motivated by two main reasons, namely economic and defense. The initial construction of this railway line was carried out in stages starting from the taking over of the Batavia - Karawang line by Staatsspoorwegen from a private company Bataviasche Ooster Spoorweg Maatschappij (BOS), then continued with the construction of the railway line from Karawang to Padalarang. The operation of the Batavia - Bandung route across Karawang - Padalarang, was an effort to shorten the travel time and increases the economic growth of the people around the route. This is in line with the goal of railway construction by the state company Staatsspoorwegen, which is to improve the welfare of the population. However, the arrival of Japan in Indonesia in 1942 made many things in the railway sector change. Thus, the Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia came to an end.
