Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperlihatkan bagaimana ambivalensi dan hibriditas yang digambarkan dalam novel Crazy Rich Asians yang ditulis oleh Kevin Kwan dengan cara menganalisa narasi dan dialog yang ada. Penulis memilih untuk melakukan penelitian ini karena di negara-negara yang pernah mengalami penjajahan isu-isu yang terkait dengan budaya dikarenakan bertemunya budaya mereka dengan budaya penjajah masihlah dapat dirasakan hingga masa sekarang. Contoh dari isu budaya tersebut adalah ambivalensi dan hibriditas. Oleh karena itu, penulis terlebih dahulu mengidentifikasi ambivalensi dan hibriditas yang digambarkan dalam novel dengan menggunakan teori ambivalensi dan hibriditas oleh Homi K. Bhabha. Data yang diambil dari narasi dan dialog kemudian dikumpulkan dan dianalisa. Hasil dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa Kwan menggambarkan ambivalesi ketertarikan dan penolakan budaya melalui Eleanor, dan juga menggambarkan dua jenis hibriditas yaitu hibriditas bahasa dan budaya yang terlihat dari bagaimana para karakter terkadang menggunakan Bahasa Inggris Singapura (Singlish) dan juga acara-acara yang diadakan oleh para karakter tersebut. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif analitis interpretatif. ********** This study is intended to reveal how the ambivalence and hybridity are portrayed in the novel Crazy Rich Asians written by Kevin Kwan through analyzing the narrations and dialogues. The writer chose to conduct this study because, due to colonization, colonized people experienced several issues with their culture that happened because of the meeting of their culture with the culture of the colonizers. Examples of those issues are ambivalence and hybridity. For that reason, the writer first identifies the ambivalence and hybridity portrayed in the novel by using Homi K. Bhabha’s ambivalence and hybridity theory. The data taken from the dialogues and narrations is then collected and analyzed. It reveals that Kwan portrays repulsion and attraction of ambivalence through Eleanor, and also portrays two types of hybridity, which are linguistic and cultural hybridity that can be seen in how the characters sometimes used Singapore English (Singlish), and the events that held by the characters themselves. This research is conducted using descriptive analytical interpretative method.
