Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi budaya gangsta dalam lagu-lagu pilihan oleh grup rap N.W.A. dalam album mereka Straight Outta Compton. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitik, penelitian ini menganalisis lirik yang merepresentasikan budaya gangsta dalam lagu-lagu tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori semiotika Roland Barthes dan teori representasi Stuart Hall. Teori semiotik digunakan untuk menganalisis denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos di dalam lirik. Kemudian, analisis semiotik digunakan untuk menganalisis representasi budaya gangsta dalam lagu-lagu terpilih. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa representasi budaya gangsta dapat dilihat melalui penyebutan kriminal, penyerangan, penggunaan senjata api, pembunuhan, peredaran narkoba, penyalahgunaan narkoba, penyalahgunaan alkohol, identitas sosial, materialisme, dan kebencian terhadap wanita. Dari karakteristik tersebut, peneliti menemukan beberapa aspek yang merepresentasikan budaya gangsta; pentingnya reputasi dan rasa hormat, jenis obat yang diterima dan tidak diterima, peran alkohol, kebencian terhadap wanita, dan cara menghasilkan uang di budaya gangsta. Dengan penelitian ini, diharapkan pembaca dapat menemukan wawasan tentang bagaimana budaya gangsta direpresentasikan dalam lagu-lagu yang dipilih. Terakhir, diharapkan hasil penelitian ini dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi kajian budaya khususnya pada topik budaya gangsta dalam lagu rap. Juga diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi peneliti sebagai referensi untuk penelitian yang akan datang. **** This study aims to analyze the representation of gangsta culture in selected songs written by rap group N.W.A. in their album Straight Outta Compton. Using descriptive-analytical method, this study analyzes lyrics that represent gangsta culture in the songs. This research uses Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory and Stuart Hall’s representation theory. The semiotic theory is used to analyze the denotation, connotation, and myth of the lyrics. And then, the semiotic analysis is used to analyze the representation of gangsta culture in the selected songs. The result of this research shows that representation of gangsta culture can be seen through the mention of crime, assault, use of guns, killing, drug dealing, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, social identity, materialism, and misogyny. From these characteristics, the researcher found several aspects that represent gangsta culture; importance of reputation and respect, socially acceptable and non-acceptable drug types, role of alcohol, misogyny, and money-making in gangsta culture. By this research, it is expected that the reader can find insight on how gangsta culture was represented in the selected songs. Lastly, it is expected that the result of this research can contribute to cultural study especially in topic of gangsta culture in rap song. It is also expected to be useful for researcher as a reference for future research.
