Abstract

This research aimed to see the lexical density of the discussion section of three skripsis (SK) and three research articles (RA) and the transitivity of its nominal groups. Halliday’s lexical density measurement, which divide the number of lexical items with the number of clauses, was used. It was found that SK have a higher lexical density level than RA (8,5 compared to 6,8). The reason being that one of the SK text repeats dozens of lexical items in one clause, giving it a high lexical density score. If that text were to be ignored, then RA’s lexical density would be higher than SK (6,8 compared to 5,7). The transitivity structure of the nominal group was then investigated. RA was found to have more nominal groups than SK (255 compared to 235). The most common nominal group structure in RA and SK is similar, they are: deictic + thing, deictic + thing + qualifier, classifier + thing, and deictic + classifier + thing. RA was found to have more complex nominal group structure, i.e., having multiple modifier in a single nominal group. It also involves more classifier and qualifier, which are realized by lexical items. SK on the other hand, have more simple structure nominal group, often with deictic and numerative which are realized by function words. It was concluded that RA, which has a higher lexical density score, has more nominal groups that are complex which are realized with lexical items more frequently.
