Abstract

*** This study examines the forms of double oppression in the novel The Shadow King specifically based on the perspective of postcolonial feminism. After the analysis, it can be seen that the novel discusses women who experience an inferior position as a result of the dominance of the invasion system carried out by Italy and the patriarchal domination of both victims of imperial ideology and victims of indigenous patriarchy. Because of the experience of the double oppression that Ethiopian women experience in the novel, they are at the lowest level in the layers of colonialism. Related to the issues in it, descriptive analysis method is used with the aim of analysing the process of Hirut, Aster, the cook and other characters in overcoming the double oppression they experience, this study also uses Five Faces of Oppression from Iris Young (1990) to analyse forms of oppression experienced by women in The Shadow King. The results of the analysis of this study indicate that the double oppression which the characters in this novel received is influenced by patriarchal factors, these characters also rise up and participate in fighting directly at the forefront against Italy which shows the attitude of women's empowerment towards one another.
