Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji respon siswa sekolah dasar terhadap kata-kata guru yang digunakan untuk mengelola kelas selama proses belajar Bahasa Inggris. Mengkaji respon siswa dalam pembelajaran akan berguna untuk menilai apakah siswa terlibat secara aktif. Ujaran siswa dan guru ditranskripsikan dan dianalisis fungsinya dengan Interpersonal Moves, selanjutnya fungsi ujaran siswa dikaji lebih lanjut untuk menentukan jenis respon siswa (verbal, action dan verbal with action responses). Kata kerja dari setiap ujaran siswa dikategorikan menurut Standar Proses Kurikulum 2013 untuk menemukan area pelibatan siswa. Berdasarkan perhitungan terdapat 1149 ujaran siswa dan 1702 ujaran guru. Dari 1702 ujaran guru terdapat 469 ujaran yang digunakan untuk mengelola kelas. Dari 1149 ujaran siswa, terdapat 309 yang digunakan untuk merespon ujaran guru tersebut. Dari 309 respon siswa tersebut, terdapat 211 berupa respon verbal, 50 respon tindakan dan 23 berupa respon verbal yang diikuti respon tindakan. Kemudian, terdapat 113 pelibatan behavioural, 82 cognitive, dan 70 pelibatan emotional. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa sekolah dasar yang diteliti lebih banyak menunjukkan respon siswa dalam bentuk verbal. Bahkan ketika guru sedang mengelola kelas, lebih banyak melibatkan behavioral siswa seperti mengulang perkataan guru dan melaksanakan instruksi guru. ***** This study was aimed to examine students’ responses toward teachers’ talks which were used to manage the class in English learning. Examining students’ responses would be used to evaluate whether students actively participate or not. Students and teachers’ utterances were transcribed and analyzed using Interpersonal Moves, then students’ utterances function would be examined to determine the students’ responses types (verbal, action or both responses). Action verbs of students’ utterances were categorized refers to Standar Proses Kurikulum 2013 to determine student engagement’ types. Based on the calculation of the analysis, there were 1149 students’ utterances and 1702 teachers’ utterances. From 1702 teachers’ utterances, 468 utterances were used to manage the class. From 1149 students’ utterances, 309 utterances were used to respond the teachers’ talks. From 309 utterances, there were 221 verbal responses, 50 action responses, 23 both responses. Then, there were 113 behavioral students’ engagements, 82 cognitive engagements and 70 emotional engagements. Based on those findings, we can conclude that English learning in primary school observed shown that students more responded in verbal responses. Moreover, when the teachers managed the class, they more involved in students’ behavioral engagement, like repeating teacher’s talk and do teacher’s instruction.
