Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi karena ketakutan dan kecemasan mahasiswa pada saat berbicara di depan umum, hal ini menjadi masalah yang serius. Tujuan penelitian ini menghasilkan instrumen baru berkaitan dengan Performance Public Speaking yang dikembangkan dari instrumen Public Speaking Competency Instrument (PSCS). Metode penelitian ini adalah pengembangan instrumen dengan menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 500 respon mahasiswa program studi komunikasi di dua universitas di wilayah Provinsi Jawa Barat, yaitu: Universitas Ibnu Khaldun dan Universitas As-Syafi’iah. Sampel dipilih secara random sampling dengan ketentuan responden mahasiswa jenjang S1 dari berbagai semester. Instrumen PPS yang dikembangkan hasil modifikasi dari beberapa skala pengukuran sehingga terbentuk tujuh dimensi ukur, yaitu: Communication Apprehension, Supporting material, Verbal Delivery, Anxiety, Ability to Concentrate, Self-Understanding, dan Self-Reported. Instrumen hasil modifikasi terdiri dari 48 item untuk diujikan dan dianalisis secara Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa instrumen PPS yang dikembangkan dalam kategori baik dan reliabel berada pada nilai 0,86, sedangkan karakteristik yang paling dominan direspons oleh mahasiswa, yaitu: Self-Understanding dan Self-reported. Kata Kunci: Pengembangan Instrumen, Performance Public Speaking, Validitas This research was motivated by the fear and anxiety of students when speaking in public, this became a serious problem. The purpose of this research is to produce a new instrument related to Public Speaking Performance which was developed from the Public Speaking Competency Instrument (PSCS). This research method is development using a quantitative approach. The sample in this study amounted to 500 student responses from the communication study program at two universities in the province of West Java, namely: Ibn Khaldun University and As-Syafi'iah University. The sample was selected by random sampling with the provision that the respondents were undergraduate students from various semesters. The PPS instrument developed was modified from several measurement scales to form seven measuring dimensions, namely: Communication Apprehension, Supporting material, Verbal Delivery, Anxiety, Ability to Concentrate, Self-Understanding, and Self�Reported. The modified instrument consists of 48 items to be tested and analyzed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The results of this study indicate that the PPS instrument developed in the good and reliable category is at a value of 0.86, while the most dominant characteristics are responded to by students, namely: Self-Understanding and Self�reported.
