Abstract
***** This study analyzes how the act of environmental ethics is represented in Javanese folklore children’s picture books. The data were taken from a picture book Seri Cerita Rakyat 34 Provinsi consisting of Pande Gelang, Lutung Kasarung, Bawang Merah Bawang Putih, Suwidak Loro, and Keong Mas that was published in 2017 written by Dian Kristiani. In revealing the representation of environmental ethics in children’s picture books, the writer uses Social Semiotics theory by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen to analyze the visual elements and also the five stages of narrative theory by Tzvetan Todorov. The findings visual elements and written text are integrated with space and place theory and ecocriticism to explore the environmental ethics in each region in Java Island specifically. The results show that Javanese folklore children’s picture books have constructed the concept of environmental ethics through cultural features of Banten, West Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java. These features, especially, can be distinguished from the setting of place, the traditional clothes that the characters wear, the specific animals or plants from the folklore’s origins, and the cultural habit. Furthermore, space and place aspects are also used to reinforce the portrayal of environmental ethics as a complementary to the visual images and narrations. Seri Cerita Rakyat 34 Provinsi represents the concept of environmental ethics by emphasizing on the custom, culture, habit, and way of life in each region in Java Island to educate the reader regarding environmental conservation.
