Abstract

In 2016, a novel about the murder of two multiracial kids named Mila and Adam Masse by their White nanny, Louise, became the most-read novel in France. Chanson Douce or the UK’s version is Lullaby. The story is inspired by an actual event in New York. The researcher believes the murder motive in the story relates to racial hatred and a sense of superiority of the nanny towards the family. Thus, the study aims to examine White supremacy over people of color is revealed in the novel. The nanny position makes White supremacy portrayed implicitly. Hence, emotions of racism by Spanierman & Cabrera (2015) are used to identify Louise’s emotions which are central to her racial attitude and ideology. The result shows that Louise is a racist and a White supremacist. Then, Frederickson’s ways of White supremacy are also used to analyze how Louise reveals white supremacy through her attitude, ideology, and policy. In the attitude, Louise shows her sense of superiority and hostile behaviour toward the Masse. Afterward, she, too, has the colonizer ideology. Her effort to maintain the superior position is through implicit guidelines in the form of utterances as the policy of White supremacy.
