Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan mengkaji representasi identitas tempat, yang mengakui peran tempat geografis dalam pembentukan identitas tokoh utama dalam lima buku cerita rakyat bergambar anak Provinsi Jawa yang terdiri dari Provinsi Jawa Barat (1 buku), Provinsi Jawa Tengah ( 1 buku), Provinsi Jawa Timur (1 buku), Provinsi Banten (1 buku), Provinsi Yogyakarta (1 buku). Buku-buku ini dipilih karena kesamaan plot dan penggunaan setting sebagai komponen utama narasi. Studi kasus berlapis ini memiliki dua lapisan. Lapisan pertama yang menggunakan definisi ruang dan tempat bersama Ecocriticism oleh Garrarrd (2004) akan digunakan untuk menentukan hubungan antara tokoh utama dan lingkungannya. Lapisan kedua menggunakan semiotika Sosial oleh Kress dan Van Luween (1985) untuk menganalisis teks visual yang merepresentasikan identitas tempat dan lima tahap narasi Todorov (1960) digunakan untuk menganalisis teks tertulis. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa visual dan teks tertulis disinkronkan ketika karakter utama mengubah setting mereka dengan melakukan perjalanan di kelima tahap. Dalam perjalanannya, tokoh-tokoh utama diilustrasikan bersama dengan satu atau dua aspek makna identitas tempat, yang menunjukkan perbedaan dalam budaya masing-masing provinsi. Hal ini menyimpulkan keragaman identitas tempat di Provinsi Jawa dan perbedaan tersebut mampu membentuk ruang lingkup identitas tempat yang lebih luas yang mengakui sebuah doxa yang diwariskan dari satu generasi ke generasi lain yang berkonotasi seperangkat aturan tak sadar yang diterima tanpa perlawanan. Oleh karena itu, identitas tempat yang lebih besar dimiliki oleh tokoh utama sebagai orang-orang dari Pulau Jawa. Kata kunci: identitas tempat, Provinsi Jawa, semiotika sosial, lima babak naratif, buku cerita anak. ********* This paper aims to examine the representation of place identity, which recognized the role of geographical place in the forming of the main characters identity in five children's picture books retelling folktales from Java Provinces consisting of West Java Province (1 title), Central Java Province (1 title), East Java Province (1 title) Banten Province (1 title), Yogyakarta Province (1 title). These books were chosen over the similarity in plot and the use of settings as the main components of the narrarive. This is a two-layer case study. The first layer utilized the definition of space and place along Ecocriticism by Garrarrd (2004) will be used to determine the relationship of the main characters and their environment. The second layer used Social semiotic by Kress and Van Luween (1985) to analyze the visual text representing place identity and Todorov’s five stage of narrative (1960) is deployed to analyze the written text. The results demonstrate that the visual and the written text synchronized when the main characters changed their settings by going on a journey in all five stages. The main characters are then illustrated along with one or two aspects of place identity meaning, which showed a distinction in each of the provinces' cultures. This concluded the variations of place identity of Java Provinces and that the distinctions are able to form a bigger scope of place identity that recognized a doxa passed down from one generation to another which connoted a set of unconscious rules that was accepted without resistance. Hence, the bigger place identity belongs to the main characters as the people from Java Island.
