Abstract
***** This study aims to describe the description of Planned Happenstance Skills (PHS) in Education Study Program Students at State University of Jakarta. The method used is descriptive quantitative. The sample in this study amounted to 347 undergraduate students of the education study program at State University of Jakarta who had taken PKM 117, consisting of the 2018 and 2019 classes. The technique of getting the sample was incidental sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from the Planned Happenstance Career Inventory (PHCI) instrument developed by Kim et al. (2014) and analyzed through descriptive statistical techniques. The results showed that students of education study programs at State University of Jakarta had a higher mean PHS score on each dimension compared to previous studies, which amounted to 4.23 for the mean on the optimism dimension, 4.07 for flexibility, 4.06 for persistence, 4.19 for curiosity, and 3.97 for risk-taking. The optimism dimension has the highest mean score and the risk-taking dimension has the lowest mean score. This shows that students tend to be able to see new opportunities from unexpected events as a possibility that can be achieved. Based on the results of this study, the Jakarta State University can develop PHS in students, especially in the risk-taking dimension by developing basic educational courses such as Educational Foundations, Learning and Teaching Theories, and the Development of Students, as well as providing various programs, such as internship programs, seminars/workshops, and entrepreneurship programs in order to help students develop their ability to take risks.
