Abstract

***** This study aims to find out how communal violence is framed by Al Jazeera and BBC in the Delhi violence 2020 articles. The research method applied in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data in this research are obtained from two online news articles related to the Delhi violence in 2020 from the websites of Al Jazeera titled “‘Show humanity’: India opposition slams gov’t on Delhi violence” and the BBC titled “Delhi riots: Anger as judge critical of violence removed” which were published on the period of February until March 2020. The data used are words, idioms, phrases, clauses, and images that show the use of frames in reporting communal violence in the selected news articles. The data are analyzed using the four models of framing analysis by Pan and Kosicki namely syntactical, script, thematic, and rhetoric structures. The result shows that Al Jazeera emphasizes on how the communal violence is mostly affecting Muslims by having a lot of paragraphs about it. Al Jazeera also prefers to call the incident of Delhi violence with the word “violence”. Then, the BBC article mostly use their own statements by employing the word “riots” which shows how BBC frame communal violence: that one side is not particularly targeted by the other and rather it happened spontaneously between Hindus and Muslims.
