Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis Othering dan trauma antargenerasi serta hubungan antara keduanya yang digambarkan dalam komunitas subaltern Afrika-Amerika dalam novel The Hate U Give karya Angie Thomas. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Othering dari Gayatri Spivak dan trauma antargenerasi dari Rakoff untuk menganalisis penggambaran tersebut. Selanjutnya, penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi dari Spivak yakni vertretung dan darstellung untuk menganalisis hubungan antara kedua teori tersebut di dalam novel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggambaran Othering dapat dibagi menjadi tiga macam, yaitu melalui esensialisasi, stereotip, dan kekerasan struktural. Di sisi lain, penggambaran trauma antargenerasi juga dapat dibagi menjadi tiga: kesedihan kolektif, gangguan hubungan, dan kesenjangan sosial-budaya dan ekonomi. Terakhir, korelasi antara kedua teori tersebut dapat dilihat dari bagaimana pengaruhnya terhadap representasi tokoh-tokoh dalam buku ini; vertretung digambarkan melalui tokoh utama, Starr Carter, sedangkan derstellung digambarkan melalui varian-varian karakterisasi yang berbeda dari Khalil Harris berdasarkan maksud dan medium yang digunakan. ***** The study focuses on analysing Othering and intergenerational trauma as well as the corelation between the two portrayed in the subaltern African American community in The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. This study applied Gayatri Spivak’s theory of Othering also Rakoff’s intergenerational trauma to analyse the portrayal. Furthermore, this study used Spivak’s representation, vertretung and darstellung to analyse the corelation between the two theories of the novel. The finding showed that the portrayal of Othering can be mainly divided into three distinctions: through essentialization, stereotyping, and structural violence. On the other hand, the portrayal of intergenerational trauma can be also divided into three: collective grief, attachment disruptions, and sociocultural and economic disparities. Lastly, the correlation between the two theories can be seen with how it affects the representation of characters in the novel; vertretung or is depicted by the main character, Starr Carter; while derstellung is portrayed through the different variants of Khalil Harris’ character depending on the intention and medium being used.
