Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaimana Gordon Ramsay menggunakan strategi kesopanan berbahasa terhadap para kontestan di MasterChef US, kemudian meneliti faktor-faktor apa saja yang berkontribusi dalam penggunaan strategi yang dipilih. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan pragmatik dan teori strategi kesopanan berbahasa oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987) sebagai kerangka kerja dan teori tentang factor yang berkontribusi berdasarkan konteks budaya oleh Lichao Song (2010), penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif-kualitatif, yang dianggap sebagai metode yang paling sesuai untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian. Data penelitian ini diambil dari tuturan Gordon Ramsay dalam MasterChef US season 05, episode 08. Penelitian ini menemukan adanya 52 tuturan yang mengandung strategi kesopanan berbahasa dan mengungkapkan bahwa Gordon Ramsay paling banyak menggunakan strategi kesopanan positif berjumlah 20 tuturan, kemudian strategi kesopanan secara terus terang 18 tuturan, diikuti oleh strategi kesopanan secara basa-basi 12 tuturan, dan strategi paling sedikit adalah strategi kesopanan negatif dengan hanya 2 tuturan. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Gordon Ramsay sebagian besar menggunakan strategi kesopanan positif untuk menciptakan atmosfer yang mendukung bagi para kontestan, sehingga dapat mendorong para kontestan untuk terus berpartisipasi dan memungkinkan Gordon Ramsay untuk menjalin hubungan dan membangun relasi dengan para kontestan. Pada akhirnya, penggunaan strategi kesopanan positif digunakan untuk memperhalus gaya bimbingan yang keras dari Gordon Ramsay dan membuat umpan baliknya lebih konstruktif. Selain itu, penulis menemukan bahwa penggunaan strategi kesopanan sangat dipengaruhi oleh faktor peran sosial dari Gordon Ramsay sebagai juri dan mentor yaitu dengan tujuan menciptakan lingkungan yang lebih responsif untuk saran-sarannya dan memungkinkan para kontestan untuk menerima dan menerapkan nasihatnya dengan lebih baik dan untuk mengurangi jarak sosial antara dirinya dengan para kontestan. ***** This study aims to analyze how Gordon Ramsay performed politeness strategies towards the contestants in MasterChef US, then investigate the factors that contributed to the chosen strategy. Using a pragmatic approach with Brown and Levinson's theory of politeness strategy (1987) as the framework and the contributing factors based on the cultural context by Lichao Song (2010), this study applied a descriptive-qualitative method which is believed to be the most suitable method to achieve the aim of the study. The data of the study were drawn from Gordon Ramsay's utterances in MasterChef US season 05, episode 08. The study found 52 utterances that contained politeness strategies and revealed that Gordon Ramsay mostly used positive politeness with 20 utterances, then bald-on-record with 18 utterances, followed by the off-record with 12 utterances, and the least strategy performed negative politeness with only 2 utterances. This study found that Gordon Ramsay mostly performs positive politeness to build a supportive atmosphere for the contestants; thus, he can encourage the contestants to continue participating and allow Gordon Ramsay to establish rapport and build relationships with the contestants. After all, positive politeness softened Gordon Ramsay’s harsh mentoring style and made his feedback more constructive. Moreover, the writer found that the use of politeness strategy is widely affected by the factor of Gordon Ramsay’s social roles as the judge and mentor with the aim to create a more receptive environment for his suggestions and allow contestants to absorb and implement his advice better and to reduce the social distance between him and the contestants.
