Abstract

***** This study aims to analyze the figurative language used in the song lyrics of Rina Sawayama's Sawayama album. The objectives are to identify the types of figurative language employed by Sawayama in her songs in the album and to the main themes and societal issues conveyed through the use of figurative language. A descriptive qualitative method is employed, utilizing Perrine's theory of figurative language to categorize and explain the instances of figurative language in the album. The analysis reveals a total of 113 examples of figurative language across the songs. These instances include similes (4.4%), symbols (7.1%), metaphors (16.8%), personification (5.3%), apostrophe (1.8%), synecdoche (1.8%), metonymy (1.8%), paradox (0.9%), understatement (0.9%), irony (5.3%), alliteration (9.7%), allusion (18.6%), and onomatopoeia (2.6%). Hyperbole emerges as the most dominant type, occurring 26 times (23.0%) throughout the album. The usage of hyperbole aims to intensify the emotional impact and messages conveyed in the songs. Additionally, the analysis uncovers various societal issues in the songs from the album such as generational struggles, consumerism, microaggressions, gender expectations, displacement, dissatisfaction with society, and cultural objectification. The album also explores themes of friendship, self-love, youth, self-empowerment, intimate connections, and toxic relationships, which also resonate with personal experiences.
