Abstract
***** This research examines the monstrous feminine that is portrayed in The Girl Next Door (1989) by Jack Ketchum. The female antagonist named Ruth Chandler shows castrating traits towards her children which is different from being a nurturant mother. This study aims to identify on what kind of face and the complex of monstrous feminine that has been represented in The Girl Next Door (1989). The researcher employs monstrous feminine theory by Barbara Creed (1993) and abjection of woman and the horror literature conception by Julia Kristeva (1982). By employing psychoanalytic approach by Simone de Beauvoir (1989), it is to comprehend monstrous traits that are written through the dialogues and narratives. There are two findings that has been found; Firstly, the catastrophic traits that Ruth Chandler expressed as indicating castrating mother as one of seven faces of monstrous feminine; Secondly, the complex of a castrating mother is that there is an abject figure who desires to project her abjection towards her children as it is shown on Ruth Chandler that she projected her abjection on her children, as well as Ruth Chandler is a castrated figure because of her surroundings when she was a young girl. Ruth Chandler as the female antagonist represented the traits of castrating mother such as taking control, being dominant, possessive, and manipulative behaviour. Keywords: monstrous feminine, castrating mother, abjection of woman.
