Abstract

Penelitian ini meneliti tentang perubahan respon yang ditunjukkan oleh karakter utama wanita dalam novel ketika dihadapkan dengan skandal sosial yang menimpa keluarganya. Novel yang dipilih dalam penelitian ini adalah novel karya Sarah Vaughan yang berjudul Anatomy of A Scandal. Sumber data yang diperoleh berupa kata, frasa, klausa, kalimat, hingga paragraph yang menunjukkan perspektif karakter utama wanita Sophie Whitehouse dan responnya selama kasus persidangan suaminya, James Whitehouse. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan dua teori yang bersebrangan, Eksistensialis Feminisme oleh Simone de Beauvoir dan Psikoanalisis oleh Sigmund Freud. Penggabungan kedua teori ini dimaksudkan untuk menemukan aspek-aspek yang lebih luas yang mempengaruhi respon karakter Sophie dan perubahannya di sepanjang cerita terhadap kasus perselingkuhan dan pemerkosaan suaminya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aspek internal dan eksternal dapat mempengaruhi dorongan internal seseorang dalam membuat keputusan. Keinginan Sophie untuk mengekspresikan perasaannya selalu tertahan oleh norma-norma sosial dan stereotip gender yang telah melekat pada dirinya. Sebagai pemenuhan dan kompromisasi Id dan Superegonya, Ego Sophie bekerja dengan menunjukkan kesetiannya mendampingi suaminya selama skandal beredar. Kompromi-kompromi ini semakin lama meluruh bersamaan dengan berlangsungnya persidangan skandal suaminya, menghadirkan eksistensialis feminisme akan kesadaran Sophie mengenai nilai dan keinginan dirinya tanpa terpengaruh lagi oleh ekspektasi masyarakat terhadap dirinya. ***** This study examines the psychological state shown by the main female character in the novel when faced with a social scandal that befell her family. The novel chosen in this study is a novel by Sarah Vaughan entitled Anatomy of A Scandal. Sources of data obtained are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs that show the perspective of the main female character Sophie Whitehouse and her response during the trial of her husband, James Whitehouse. In this study the authors used two opposing theories, Existentialist Feminism by Simone de Beauvoir and Psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud. Merging these two theories is meant to discover the broader aspects that influence Sophie's character response and her changes throughout the story towards her husband's infidelity and rape cases. The results of this study indicate that internal and external aspects can affect a person's internal drive in making decisions. Sophie's desire to express her feelings has always been stifled by social norms and gender stereotypes that have been attached to her. As the fulfillment and compromise of her Id and Superego, Ego Sophie works by showing her loyalty to accompany her husband during the scandal. These compromises decayed over time as her husband's scandal trial took place, presenting existentialist feminism of Sophie's awareness of her own values and desires without being affected by society's expectations on her.
