Abstract

Tujuan dari tesis ini adalah untuk mengkaji dampak dari pengalaman traumatis sebelumnya pada tokoh utama novel seiring berjalannya narasi. Ini dicapai dengan menggunakan teori psikoanalitik oleh Sigmund Freud untuk menganalisis narasi. Penelitian ini menggali pengaruh trauma masa lalu pada kehidupan remaja Finch dan Violet, khususnya dalam kaitannya dengan pergumulan mereka dengan identitas. Kedua karakter dibentuk oleh pengalaman traumatis mereka, dengan Finch bergulat dengan gangguan bipolar yang tidak terdiagnosis, dan Violet menghadapi gangguan stres pascatrauma (PTSD) yang tidak terdiagnosis. Sebagai remaja, mereka menghadapi kesulitan dalam menemukan rasa memiliki dan penerimaan dalam masyarakat. Tantangan-tantangan ini terkait erat dengan efek trauma masa lalu mereka yang bertahan lama dalam perjalanan mereka untuk membangun identitas masing-masing. Finch dan Violet mengalami trauma dan konflik yang membentuk mereka menjadi diri mereka sendiri. Keduanya juga berbagi hubungan yang bermakna yang menghasilkan perjalanan penyembuhan yang saling menyembuhkan dan mendapatkan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang bagaimana mereka merangkul kehidupan dan bagaimana mereka pulih dari trauma mereka. Finch, sebagian besar tindakannya diatur oleh 'id' dan dia adalah orang yang impulsif; di sisi lain, sebagian besar aktivitas Violet didominasi oleh 'ego', ia dikendalikan oleh rasa bersalah serta menyangkal dirinya. Implikasi dari tesis ini adalah menyadarkan masyarakat bahwa trauma bisa berbahaya jika mereka menunjukkan gejala seperti mengganggu, menghindari masalah, dan terpisah dari masyarakat setelah mengalami trauma. Dalam novel ini, Finch putus asa dan memutuskan untuk bunuh diri, sedangkan Violet mendapatkan pemahaman yang mendalam tentang bagaimana hidup itu penting dan dia harus tetap hidup dan membangun ketahanan dan pemahaman tentang dirinya sendiri. Namun, kondisi tersebut harus diobati sebelum menjadi kronis. Semoga skripsi ini dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi dunia pendidikan sebagai ujian karya sastra, khususnya bagi mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra dan Bahasa Inggris. ***** The objective of this thesis is to examine the impact of previous traumatic experiences on the main characters of the novel as the narrative progresses. This was achieved by employing a psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud to analyze the narrative. The research delves into the influence of past traumas on the adolescent lives of Finch and Violet, specifically in relation to their struggles with identity. Both characters are shaped by their traumatic experiences, with Finch grappling with an undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and Violet facing an undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As teenagers, they encounter difficulties in finding their sense of belonging and acceptance within society. These challenges are intricately tied to the lingering effects of their past traumas on their journey to establish their individual identities. Finch and Violet experiences trauma and conflicts that shape them to become who they are. The two also shares a meaningful relationship which results in a healing journey which heal each other and gain a better understanding about how they embrace life and how they recover from their own trauma. Finch, most of his acts are governed by his 'id' and he is impulsive; on the other hand, most of Violet's activities are dominated by her 'ego,' and she is controlled by her emotions of guilt and denies herself. The implication of this thesis is to alert people that trauma might be dangerous if they exhibit symptoms such as intrusiveness, avoiding problems, and separation from society after suffering trauma. In this novel, Finch broke down and resolved to commit suicide, whereas Violet gained a deep understanding of how life matters and she had to keep living and build resilience and understanding about herself. However, the condition must be treated before it can become chronic. Hopefully, this thesis will contribute to education as an examination of literary work, particularly for English and Literature Department students.
