Abstract

This thesis is entitled Appraisal Analysis of International Press Coverage about 2019 Hong Kong Protests. It is to seek out the appraising items in six international news articles from Asia Times, The Japan Times, Global Times, The New York Times, BBC News and NK News. The aim of the research is to find out the appraising items and to know the position of the journalists of the six articles regarding the issue. This research employed the theory of James Robert Martin and Peter Robert Rupert White‘s Appraisal (2005) which concerned with evaluation: the kinds of attitudes that are negotiated in a text, the strength of the feeling involved and the ways in which values are sourced and readers aligned. The data were collected from the six news articles from Asia Times, The Japan Times, Global Times, The New York Times, BBC News and NK News. The methodology of this research applied descriptive qualitative method. The result of the study showed that (1) The ‘attitude’ appraising items are mostly found in the article of Asia Times with 34 appraising items. It is followed by article of The New York Times with 32 appraising items, The Japan Times with 28 items, BBC News with 25 items, Global Times with 22 items, and NK News with 21 items. Based on the number of the results, there are 11% Affect, 52% Judgement, and 37% Appreciation in all the six articles to evaluate different subjects such as the Extradition Bill, the response regarding the protests, the police attitude during the protests, and Others (Carrie Lam and the government, Chinese government, Western countries). The resource or Engagement in attitudes are 71 monogloss items and 73 heterogloss items. There is slight difference between the monogloss and heterogloss, this means the journalists of six news articles besides used their own voices in evaluating the issues, they also used external voices to validate or support their evaluation. (2) Based on the appraising items, the journalists of all six media have positioned themselves into two sides, support and oppose. The analysis showed that four international news media media supported Hong Kong protests. They are Asia Times (Hong Kong) with 50% Negative Judgement toward HK Police, The Japan Times (Japan) with 68% Negative Judgement toward HK Police and Chinese Government, The New York Times (USA) with 47% Negative Appreciation toward HK Government system and Extradition Bill, and BBC News (UK) with 57% Negative Judgement toward HK Government. Meanwhile, the rest two media opposed the Hong Kong protests. They are The Global Times (China) with 73% Negative Judgement toward Protesters, NK News (North Korea) with 57% Negative Judgement toward Western Countries. Skripsi ini berjudul Appraisal Analysis of International Press Coverage about 2019 Hong Kong Protests. Data dikumpulkan dari enam artikel berita dari Asia Times, The Japan Times, Global Times, The New York Times, BBC News, dan NK News.
