Abstract

******ABSTRAK***** Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana keenam puisi Langston Hughes yang berjudul The Negro Speaks of Rivers, I, Too, Let America Be America Again, Mother to Son, The Negro Mother, and Dream Variations merepresentasikan budaya Afro-Amerika melalui perangkat bahasa yang digunakan. *******ABSTRACT****** This study aims to examine how Langston Hughes' six poems entitled The Negro Speaks of Rivers, I, Too, Let America Be America Again, Mother to Son, The Negro Mother, and Dream Variations represent Afro-American culture through the language devices used. In analyzing, the theory used by the author is cultural materialism by Raymond Williams using a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes words, phrases, and clauses that show representations of Afro-Americans. The results of the analysis show that the six poems represent Afro-Americans which are mostly found in anaphora, imagery, symbolism, simile, and personification. In addition, the cultural values obtained from the poems teach about challenges in life such as working hard, being confident, having desire and determination, learning, and respecting cultural history.
