Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi proses adaptasi sosial budaya yang dialami oleh mahasiswa asing di Universitas Negeri Jakarta, yang meliputi tantangan dan strategi yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa asing untuk menjalani proses adaptasi tersebut. Penelitian ini juga mengkaji peran Centre of International Services dalam mengelola dan mendukung adaptasi mahasiswa asing di Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Secara lebih mendalam, penelitian ini menggunakan teori strategi adaptasi John W. Bennett sebagai pisau analisis untuk memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih komprehensif. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi yang berfokus pada pemahaman mendalam terhadap pengalaman adaptasi sosial budaya mahasiswa asing di Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Penelitian ini dilakukan mulai dari bulan Juli 2023 hingga Maret 2024 di Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari enam orang informan, yakni koordinator pusat layanan Centre of International Services dan lima mahasiswa asing yaitu MA, SSS, WSM, CG, dan RA dengan memiliki latar belakang negara, jenjang pendidikan, jurusan, usia, dan gender yang berbeda. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam, studi literatur, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa selama proses beradaptasi mahasiswa asing menghadapi berbagai tantangan utama yakni tantangan akan perbedaan bahasa, perbedaan budaya, dan perbedaan lingkungan akademik. Untuk menghadapi tantangan tersebut, mahasiswa asing membuat strategi khusus antara lain mengeksplorasi budaya Indonesia, mempelajari bahasa sehari-hari, memiliki kemampuan read the room, tidak malu bertanya, meminta bantuan kepada orang sekitar, melakukan healing, menggunakan platform digital penerjemah bahasa dan memelihara komunikasi yang rutin dengan keluarga maupun teman-teman dari negara asal. Kemudian, proses adaptasi menunjukkan hasil yang positif, di mana mahasiswa asing mampu beradaptasi di lingkungan sosial, budaya, maupun akademik yang baru serta peran pusat layanan Centre of International Services sebagai bagian institusi yang turut mendorong keberhasilan adaptasi mahasiswa asing di Universitas Negeri Jakarta. ***** This study aims to explore the socio-cultural adaptation process experienced by international students at Jakarta State University, which includes the challenges and strategies used by international students to undergo the adaptation process. This study also examines the role of the Centre of International Services in managing and supporting the adaptation of international students at Universitas Negeri Jakarta. In more depth, this study uses John W. Bennett's adaptation strategy theory as an analytical tool to gain a more comprehensive understanding. This research uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method that focuses on an in-depth understanding of the socio-cultural adaptation experiences of international students at Jakarta State University. This research was conducted at Jakarta State University from July 2023 to March 2024. The research subjects consisted of six informants, namely the coordinator of the Centre of International Services and five international students namely MA, SSS, WSM, CG, and RA with different national backgrounds, education levels, majors, ages and genders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, literature review, and documentation. The results of this study show that during the adaptation process, international students face several major challenges, namely the challenge of language differences, cultural differences, and differences in academic environment. In order to face these challenges, international students make special strategies such as exploring Indonesian culture, learn colloquial language, have the ability to read the room, not being shy to ask questions, asking for help from people around, healing, using digital language translation platforms, and maintaining regular communication with family and friends from their home countries. Then, the adaptation process shows positive results, where international students are able to adapt to the new social, cultural, and academic environments and the role of the Centre of International Services as part of the institutions that contributes to the successful adaptation of international students at Jakarta State University.
