Abstract
*****ABSTRAK***** Literatur psikologis mencerminkan keadaan pikiran manusia. Novel The Silent Patient menggambarkan konflik emosional yang kompleks yang dialami oleh sang karakter utama, Alicia Berenson, dalam menghadapi kematian suaminya serta konflik lainnya sepanjang cerita. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi penyebab masalah kecemasan neurotik Alicia Berenson dan bagaimana isu tersebut mempengaruhi perilakunya sepanjang cerita. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan menerapkan teori psikoanalisis Freud. Data dari penelitian ini adalah narasi dan dialog yang menunjukkan kecemasan neurotik Alicia. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa ada beberapa penyebab masalah kecemasan neurotik Alicia Berenson.Penyebab kecemasan neurotiknya ialah insiden bunuh diri ibunya, perlakuan buruk dan pengabaian emosional dari ayahnya, serta perselingkuhan suaminya. Akibat pengalaman traumatis dan kecemasan neurotiknya, perubahan perilaku Alicia dapat dilihat dari keheningannya, keterpisahan emosional, penghindaran konfrontasi, dan perjuangan dalam mengendalikan tindakannya. *****ABSTRACT***** Psychological literature depicts the psyche of human mind. The Silent Patient novel portrays the complex emotional struggle experienced by the main character, Alicia Berenson, in dealing with the death of her husband as well as other conflicts throughout the story. This study aims to explore the causes of Alicia Berenson’s neurotic anxiety issue and how it influences her demeanour throughout the story. This study is conducted using descriptive qualitative method, employing Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. The data of this study is the narratives and dialogues which indicate Alicis’s neurotic anxiety. This study found that there are several causes of Alicia Berenson’s neurotic anxiety issue. The causes are her mother’s suicide, mistreatment and emotional negligence from her father, and her husband’s marital affair. Due to the traumatic experiences and her neurotic anxiety, the change in Alicia’s demeanour is characterised by her silence, emotional detachment, avoidance of confrontation, and struggle in controlling her actions.
