Abstract
***** This study investigates the sexist language that represents gender stereotypes in Lessons in Chemistry (2023). Using descriptive analytical of qualitative method, this study aims to uncover the types of sexist language based on the categorization of overt and indirect sexism in Mills's theory of Language and Sexism (2008) and also describes the gender stereotypes revealed through the use of sexist language. As a result of the study, it is found that the Lessons in Chemistry series contains five types of overt sexism are naming, generic pronouns, insult terms, semantic derogation, name/titles. Furthermore, six types of indirect sexism are found are humor, prepositions, conflicting messages, metaphors, collocation, and androcentric perspectives. The use of sexist language by the male characters reflects discriminatory attitudes towards females, making them appear inferior to males as well as reinforces women's stereotypes. From the use of sexist language, four kinds of gender stereotypes are revealed: stereotypes on women’s traits, occupation, physical appearance, and behavior.
