Abstract

*****ABSTRACT***** In everyday communication, misunderstandings are often found in capturing the meaning of conversation. This is because the speaker and speech partner have not fulfilled the principle of cooperation. The cooperative principal theory proposed by P. H. Grice helps to get over ambiguity and convey hidden meaning. Grice divided the cooperative principle into four maxims, such as; maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, maxim of manner. In this study, the conversation in the TV Show Good Morning Britain became the source of data, and the video about the issue of gender among children was chosen. Additionally, this study aims to find out the reasons for violating the maxim. The data revealed that there were 50 violated utterances found in eight videos. Violation maxim of manner (32%), violation maxim of relevance (28%), violation maxim of quantity (28%), and violation maxim of quality (12%). The motivation behind the speakers violating the maxim is mostly because they want to mislead the hearer by saying untrue and doubtful statement, such as claiming someone as a cisgender or a homophobic. The speaker use presupposition that shows the statements are lack of evidence and it is based on the speaker’s opinion. The speakers also tend to give long and comprehensive explanations to persuade the hearer that children need to be educated about their gender identity and giving them a freedom to decide their own gender identity from early age. These findings imply that guest speakers tend to provide more information than necessary and exaggerate their arguments to convince listeners so they subconsciously trust the speaker's opinion.
