Abstract
*****ABSTRACT***** This study aimed to analyse the existential journey of female characters against gender stereotypes and patriarchy in Women Talking movie transcripts. Using a descriptive-interpretative qualitative method, the study explored how female characters resisted gender stereotypes and patriarchy as depicted in the Women Talking movie. Simone de Beauvoir's theory of existentialist feminism was employed to examine the dialogue that depicted gender stereotypes and the resistance of female characters. According to Beauvoir's theory, in the Women Talking movie, the female characters faced gender stereotypes including marginalisation and a sense of exclusion. They were also subjected to gender labels suggesting that women should be submissive and take on passive roles. Women were perceived as "the Other" and experienced violence due to gender stereotypes deeply rooted in patriarchal culture. Furthermore, the impact of these stereotypes caused significant uncertainty in their decision-making processes as they strived for recognition of their existence and freedom from patriarchal norms. Resistance against gender stereotypes and patriarchy was portrayed through the women as they reached a decision for the entire female population of the colony to leave, thereby gaining a sense of freedom and the opportunity to reorganise the social order to ensure women get equal rights with men.
