Abstract

*****ABSTRACT***** This study explores the integration of Transitivity Analysis, Appraisal Theory and Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony in evaluating and comparing the language of public outcry generated from the assassination case of Sikh religious leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on social media platform X. Using a descriptive-comparative case study methodology, this study is text-oriented discourse analysis of sampled tweets through purposeful stratified sampling to demonstrate how the recent conflict surrounding the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar has heightened the political and religious divide between users in Canada and India regarding the Sikh diaspora, from July 2023 until September 2023. Results of text analysis reveals that negative judgments are prevalent in the portrayal of certain issues, indicating a sustained effort to maintain ideological dominance. The engagement analysis shows a strategic use of monoglossic and heteroglossic elements to manage public consent. This study contributes to the field of critical discourse analysis by highlighting the importance of combining theoretical perspectives to understand the complex mechanisms of media influence and ideological control.
