Abstract

*****ABSTRACT***** Speaking is a crucial skill to learn yet the most difficult. The objective of this research is to prove whether role-play enhance students’ speaking ability in heterogeneous students which is the English Club students at SMPN 195 Jakarta that consist of the combination of 7th and 8th graders. This research also filling the gap from previous research where none of them had done research in heterogeneous setting. The total population is 50 students and the sample was taken by purposive sampling that consists of 32 students. This research is carried out using the quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design that divided the sample into two group named experimental that were taught speaking using role-play and control group were taught by using daily methods without using a role cards. The instruments used for collecting the data is by giving the performance test and is assessed by using speaking scoring rubric. After collecting the data, it was analyzed by using independent sample t-test. Using the statistical analysis, the researcher get t-obtained 2.976 is bigger than t-table 2.042. It means that the value of t-obtained is greater than t-table. Therefore, it proves the alternative hypothesis (H_1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H_0) is rejected. It means that there is an effect of teaching by using role-play on students’ speaking ability.
