Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menyelidiki bagaimana Billboard dan Rolling Stone menilai popularitas BTS di Amerika Serikat dengan menerapkan Teori Appraisal. Aplikasi Teori Appraisal yang dicetuskan oleh J. R. Martin dan P. R. White dapat mengungkapkan sikap penulis apakah mereka cenderung memiliki respon positif atau negatif terhadap popularitas BTS di Amerika Serikat. Untuk menganalisis enam artikel tentang popularitas BTS di Amerika Serikat, penelitian ini juga menggunakan metode interpretatif deskriptif untuk mempertajam hasil analisis. Ada enam artikel yang dipilih dari Billboard dan Rolling Stone (tiga dari Billboard dan tiga dari Rolling Stone). Artikel yang dipilih merupakan artikel yang dianggap paling merepresentasikan popularitas BTS di Amerika Serikat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kapasitas BTS dinilai positif oleh para penulis artikel Billboard dan Rolling Stone. Simpulan akhir menunjukkan bahwa Billboard dan Rolling Stone menampilkan BTS sebagai musisi yang mampu membuat karya yang bisa diterima oleh publik sehingga mereka sukses menembus tangga musik internasional dan mendapat apresiasi besar dalam tur stadium mereka di Amerika Serikat. Selain itu, dapat disimpulkan pula bahwa BTS adalah grup terbesar di Amerika Serikat saat ini dan merupakan grup Korea pertama yang berhasil meraih kesuksesan besar di Amerika Serikat. This study is conducted to see how Billboard and Rolling Stone portray BTS’ popularity in the United States by applying Appraisal Theory. By applying Appraisal Theory from J. R. Martin and P. R. R. White, it can reveal the authors’ attitude whether they have positive or negative tone towards BTS’ popularity in the United States. This study also utilized descriptive interpretative method to delivers more details in the analysis. Six articles are selected from Billboard and Rolling Stone (three articles from Billboard and three articles from Rolling Stone) through purposive sampling which are considered to be the most representative articles to report BTS’ popularity in United States. The result of this study shows that BTS is positively appraised in all six articles and Capacity, the sub-systems of Judgment takes up big portion in the result of analysis. Both Billboard and Rolling Stone writers portray BTS success as something that is stemmed from their own capacity to keep their works relevant to the public which resulting in high-charting songs and albums, as well as sold out performances. Over all, it is concluded that BTS is the biggest group to date in the United States as of now and also the first Korean group ever to gain huge success in the United States.
