Abstract
***** Fish is one of the foods that consumed often by the community due to its high protein content. Tilapia and mozambique tilapia are widely consumed and traded in traditional markets. The fish are usually cultivated in lakes, rivers, artificial ponds, and reservoirs. These waters are often contaminated by pollutant discharges from factories, such as heavy metals cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). Consumption of fish that accumulate these metals has the potential to impair health. Heavy metals can accumulate in the body of living things and are genotoxic. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the genotoxicity of Cd and Pb in tilapia and mozambique tilapia fish sold in traditional markets and their potential health risks. The research method was descriptive by analyzing the number of micronuclei (MN) and measuring the concentration of Cd and Pb in tilapia and mozambique tilapia fish tissues, and analyzing the weekly intake of Cd and Pb through fish consumption. The results showed that heavy metals Cd and Pb were not genotoxic to both fish. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in tilapia and mozambique tilapia tissues were < 0.02 mg/kg and < 0.05 mg/kg, respectively. These data are not significantly different and below the detection limit in both fish. The estimated intake of Cd (0.00026 ± 0.0001 mg/kg bw and 0.00027 ± 0.00009 mg/kg bw) and Pb (0.00065 ± 0.0003 mg/kg bw and 0.00067 ± 0.0002 mg/kg bw) due to consumption of both fish species was lower than the PTWI standard. This indicates that Cd and Pb are not genotoxic and consumption of both fish is still relatively safe.
