Abstract

Mahasiswa dari Tidore menjadi salah satu contoh kelompok yang kerap kali mengalami kesulitan untuk beradaptasi. Culture shock menjadi tantangan awal bagi mahasiswa Tidore dalam mengembangkan kemampuan adaptasi di Jakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui culture shock dalam penyesuaian diri mahasiswa Tidore di Jakarta pada forum mahasiswa Tidore Jakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Co-Culture yang dikemukakan oleh Mark Orbe. Teori yang digunakan menjelaskan tentang interaksi kelompok minoritas dalam lingkungan budaya kelompok dominan. Konsep yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah konsep komunikasi antarbudaya yang dikemukakan oleh William B. Gudykunst dan konsep penyesuaian diri yang dikemukakan oleh David C. Thomas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan tipe penelitian naratif. Paradigma yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah paradigrma konstruktivisme. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah wawancara dengan satu key informan, yaitu Ketua Umum Fomatika Jakarta dan tiga informan, yaitu Anggota Fomatika Jakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa latar belakang terjadinya culture shock pada mahasiswa dipengaruhi oleh beberapa aspek dalam beradaptasi di kota Jakarta. Mahasiswa rantau asal Tidore melewati empat fase yang sesuai dengan tinjauan konseptual culture shock yang digagas oleh Iris Varner diantaranya fase kegembiraan, fase kekecewaan, fase awal resolusi dan yang terakhir fase berfungsi dengan baik. Mahasiswa rantau melakukan strategi dapat beradaptasi di lingkungan. Strategi tersebut di antaranya adalah interaksi antara mahasiswa dengan masyarakat setempat, adaptasi bahasa, ikut serta dalam organisasi kampus, dan bersifat terbuka dengan budaya baru. Mengetahui perbedaan dan kesamaan antara budaya Tidore dan Jakarta dapat membantu mempersiapkan diri untuk menghadapi situasi sosial yang berdeda. Juga kemampuan dari komunikasi adalah kunci untuk mengurangi kesulitan dalam berinteraksi. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini, para informan telah melewati keempat tahap culture shock diantaranya tahap euforia, kekecewaan dan frustasi, penyesuaian, integrasi. Meski mengalami culture shock, para mahasiswa rantau dari Tidore yang tergabung dalam FOMATIKA JAKARTA telah sampai pada tahap terintegrasi dengan budaya Jakarta. Disarankan bagi para mahasiswa perantau untuk memiliki sikap terbuka terhadap perbedaan, baik dalam hal budaya, kebiasaan, ataupun pola pikir. ***** Students from Tidore are one example of a group that often has difficulty adapting. Culture shock is an initial challenge for Tidore students in developing their adaptability in Jakarta. The purpose of this study was to determine culture shock in the adjustment of Tidore students in Jakarta at the Tidore Jakarta student forum. This research uses the Co-Culture theory proposed by Mark Orbe. The theory used explains the interaction of minority groups in the dominant group's cultural environment. The concepts used in this research are the concept of intercultural communication proposed by William B. Gudykunst and the concept of self-adjustment proposed by David C. Thomas. The method used in this study uses a qualitative approach with a narrative research type. The paradigm used in this study is the constructivism paradigm. The data collection technique used in this study is an interview with one key informant, namely the General Chairperson of Fomatika Jakarta and three informants, namely Members of Fomatika Jakarta. The results of the study indicate that the background of culture shock in students is influenced by several aspects in adapting to the city of Jakarta. Migrant students from Tidore go through four phases that are in accordance with the conceptual review of culture shock initiated by Iris Varner, including the joy phase, the disappointment phase, the initial resolution phase and the last phase of functioning well. Migrant students carry out strategies to adapt to the environment. These strategies include interaction between students and the local community, language adaptation, participating in campus organizations, and being open to new cultures. Knowing the differences and similarities between Tidore and Jakarta cultures can help prepare yourself to face different social situations. Also, communication skills are key to reducing difficulties in interacting. The conclusion of this study, the informants have gone through four stages of culture shock including the euphoria stage, disappointment and frustration, adjustment, integration. Despite experiencing culture shock, the students from Tidore who are members of FOMATIKA JAKARTA have reached mthe stage of integration with Jakarta culture. It is recommended for students from other regions to have an open attitude towards differences, both in terms of culture, habits, or mindset.
