Abstract

Baja karbon banyak digunakan dalam pembuatan komponen kapal karena sifat mekaniknya yang baik, seperti kekuatan dan ketangguhan. Namun, mengingat kondisi operasional di lingkungan laut yang korosif, diperlukan peningkatan ketahanan terhadap korosi melalui perlakuan panas yang tepat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh holding time serta temperatur tempering terhadap kekerasan dan laju korosi baja karbon menengah yang digunakan sebagai material komponen kapal. Proses perlakuan panas dilakukan pada suhu 800°C dengan variasi waktu tahan 30 dan 45 menit, dilanjutkan pendinginan cepat (quenching) menggunakan oli SAE 10W-40, kemudian tempering pada temperatur 300°C dan 400°C. Pengujian meliputi analisis struktur mikro menggunakan mikroskop optik, uji kekerasan metode Vickers, dan uji korosi metode weight loss dalam larutan NaCl 3,5% selama 96 jam. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa waktu tahan yang lebih lama memperkuat pembentukan martensit yang meningkatkan kekerasan, sedangkan temperatur tempering berperan dalam menyeimbangkan sifat kekerasan dan keuletan. Kekerasan tertinggi tercapai pada spesimen waktu tahan 45 menit tanpa tempering (658,1 HVN), sedangkan laju korosi terendah ditemukan pada spesimen dengan waktu tahan 45 menit dan tempering 400°C (23,39 mpy). Kombinasi perlakuan tersebut direkomendasikan untuk meningkatkan performa material baja karbon menengah pada komponen kapal, khususnya untuk bagian yang menuntut kekuatan dan ketahanan terhadap korosi Kata kunci: AISI 4140; Kehilangan Berat; Tungku Listrik ***** Carbon steel is widely used in the manufacturing of ship components due to its favorable mechanical properties, such as strength and toughness. However, considering the corrosive nature of marine operational environments, it is essential to enhance its corrosion resistance through appropriate heat treatment processes. This study aims to investigate the effect of varying holding times and different tempering temperaturs on the hardness and corrosion rate of medium carbon steel used in ship component applications. The heat treatment process was conducted at 800°C with holding times of 30 and 45 minutes, followed by rapid cooling (quenching) in SAE 10W-40 oil, and subsequent tempering at temperaturs of 300°C and 400°C. The spesimens were examined through microstructural analysis using an optical microscope, hardness testing using the Vickers method, and corrosion rate evaluation via the weight loss method in a 3.5% NaCl solution for 96 hours. The results show that a longer holding time promotes the formation of martensite, leading to increased hardness, while higher tempering temperaturs contribute to a better balance between hardness and ductility. The highest hardness was recorded on the spesimen with a 45-minute holding time without tempering (658.1 HVN), while the lowest corrosion rate was observed on the spesimen with a 45-minute holding time and tempering at 400°C (23.39 mpy). This combination of heat treatments is recommended to enhance the performance of medium carbon steel for ship components, particularly in parts requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.
