Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan model bahan ajar keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris penerbangan berbasis korpus untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pilot dan pemanduan lalu lintas udara (PLLU) dalam memperoleh sertifikasi ICAO English Language Proficiency (IELP). Peserta IELP meliputi personel aktif maupun mahasiswa yang sedang mempersiapkan kelulusan. Bahan ajar IELP yang tersedia saat ini dinilai belum sepenuhnya mencerminkan situasi target, khususnya dalam menghadapi kondisi tidak normal. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini mengembangkan bahan ajar berbasis korpus dengan mengintegrasikan pendekatan Data-Driven Learning (DDL) yang memungkinkan siswa mempelajari pola bahasa otentik yang relevan dengan komunikasi penerbangan. Penelitian difokuskan pada lima pertanyaan: (1) bagaimana kebutuhan terhadap model bahan ajar berbasis korpus dianalisis; (2) bagaimana prosedur pengembangan model; (3) bagaimana prototipe bahan ajar dirancang; (4) seberapa layak model diterapkan; dan (5) seberapa efektif model tersebut dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Pengembangan model dilakukan menggunakan Successive Approximation Model (SAM), yang mencakup tiga tahap utama: persiapan, desain iteratif, dan pengembangan iteratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya kebutuhan mendesak akan bahan ajar yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa PLLU. Prototipe bahan ajar dirancang dengan memadukan prinsip DDL dan pembelajaran berbasis kasus, sehingga siswa dapat berlatih dalam konteks komunikasi penerbangan yang autentik. Kelayakan model divalidasi melalui evaluasi para ahli dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, linguistik korpus, dan desain pembelajaran, dengan rata-rata skor penilaian sebesar 4,5. Survei terhadap siswa dan dosen menunjukkan tanggapan positif serta rekomendasi penggunaan model ini di masa depan. Efektivitas model diuji menggunakan Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, yang menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan skor keterampilan berbicara siswa setelah menggunakan bahan ajar (Asym. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.046, p < 0.05) dibandingkan sebelum penggunaan. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa model bahan ajar berbasis korpus efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris penerbangan bagi mahasiswa PLLU. Produk akhir berupa buku ajar berbasis korpus dalam dua edisi, untuk siswa dan pengajar, yang diharapkan berkontribusi pada pengembangan teknologi pendidikan khususnya dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris penerbangan berbasis data. This study seeks to develop a corpus-based teaching material model for aviation English proficiency skills to meet the requirements of pilots and air traffic controllers (PLLU) in obtaining the ICAO English Language Proficiency (IELP) certification. IELP participants encompass both active personnel and students preparing for graduation. Existing IELP teaching materials are deemed insufficient in accurately reflecting target situations, particularly in addressing abnormal conditions. Consequently, this study introduces corpus-based teaching materials by integrating the Data-Driven Learning (DDL) approach, which empowers students to acquire authentic language patterns pertinent to aviation communication. The study addresses five research questions: (1) How the requirements for a corpus-based teaching material model are analysed; (2) How the procedure for developing the model is implemented; (3) How the teaching material prototype is designed; (4) How feasible the model is for implementation; and (5) How effective the model is in enhancing English-speaking skills. The model was developed using the Successive Approximation Model (SAM), comprising three primary stages: preparation, iterative design, and iterative development. The research findings suggest a compelling need for the development of teaching materials specifically designed for students enrolled in PLLU. The prototype was designed by integrating DDL principles with task-based learning, enabling students to practice English in authentic aviation communication contexts. The model’s feasibility was validated through expert evaluations in English language teaching, corpus linguistics, and instructional design, with an average assessment score of 4.7 out of 5. Surveys conducted with students and lecturers also yielded positive responses and recommendations for the model’s future application. The model’s effectiveness was assessed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, which demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ speaking skill scores after utilising the teaching materials (Asym. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.046, p < 0.05) compared to their initial levels. These findings demonstrate that the corpus-based teaching material model is effective in enhancing aviation English proficiency among PLLU students. The outcome of this study is a corpus-based instructional textbook, available in two editions: one designed for students and the other for instructors. This comprehensive resource is anticipated to contribute to the advancement of educational technology, particularly in data-driven aviation English instruction.
