Abstract

*** The pilgrimage tradition to the tomb of Raja Ali Haji on Penyengat Island remains a living cultural practice among the Malay community, despite the pressures of modernization and shifting religious interpretations. This tradition has undergone reinterpretation over time, reflecting how local values are maintained and adapted in response to changing social and spiritual landscapes. This study aims to explore how the pilgrimage is preserved, redefined, and experienced as part of everyday life, focusing on the reproduction of cultural values through social practices and local institutions. This research adopts Raymond Williams’s theory of cultural reproduction using a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation during the research period from January to February 2025. The study highlights the roles of local actors such as caretakers’ families, cultural figures, and youth groups, as well as the involvement of local government institutions in supporting and promoting the tradition. The findings reveal that cultural reproduction in this context occurs through three main aspects: intergenerational value transmission within families, collective participation in ritual and community activities, and digital promotion strategies supported by the local government. The pilgrimage is understood not merely as a religious act but as a meaningful cultural expression tied to historical memory, social solidarity, and local identity. However, challenges persist, including declining youth engagement and the risk of commodification. Sustaining this tradition requires integrated strategies such as strengthening cultural education, utilizing digital platforms, and reinforcing community-based narratives.
