Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh social support dan grit terhadap student engagement pada mahasiswa sarjana. Penelitian ini didasarkan pada pentingnya keterlibatan mahasiswa sarjana, khususnya tahun kedua dan tahun ketiga masa studi yang dikenal sebagai “the forgotten year”, dalam hasrat untuk memperoleh pengetahuan dan keterampilan mendalam menjadi motivasi signifikan, mendukung pertumbuhan pribadi dan professional di lingkungan global yang semakin kompetitif. Pada masa ini, mahasiswa menghadapi berbagai tantangan akademik dan psikologis yang dapat mengganggu kelancaran studi. Oleh karena itu, keberadaan sumber daya pribadi seperti grit dan sosial seperti social support menjadi penting dalam mendukung keterlibatan mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif desain cross-sectional. Data dikumpulkan dari 390 mahasiswa aktif di wilayah Jabodetabek melalui kuesioner daring, menggunakan tiga instrumen utama Student engagement Scale (SES), Original Grit Scale (Grit–O), dan Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL-40). Analisis dilakukan dengan analisis regresi berganda menggunakan JASP versi 0.19.3. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa social support berpengaruh positif terhadap student engagement (β = 0.139; p = 0.006), demikian pula grit yang menunjukkan pengaruh positif yang lebih kuat (β = 0.306; p < 0.001). Secara simultan kedua variable tersebut memiliki pengaruh positif yang signifikan terhadap student engagement (R² = 0.142; p < 0.001). Temuan juga menunjukkan bahwa grit memiliki kontribusi yang lebih besar dibandingkan social support dalam menjelaskan student engagement kegiatan akademik. Implikasi dari penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya pengembangan karakter dan support system yang kontekstual untuk meningkatkan keterlibatan dalam proses pembelajaran di pendidikan tinggi. ***** This research aims to examine the influence of grit and social support on student engagement among undergraduate students. This study is based on the importance of undergraduate student engagement, particularly during the second and third years of study, often referred to as “the forgotten years.” During this period, the desire to acquire deep knowledge and skills becomes a significant motivation that supports both personal and professional growth in an increasingly competitive global environment. However, students also encounter various academic and psychological challenges that may hinder their academic progress. Therefore, the presence of internal resources such as grit and external resources such as social support becomes essential in fostering their engagement. The study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected from 390 active undergraduate students in the Greater Jakarta area through an online questionnaire, using three main instruments: the Student engagement Scale (SES), the Original Grit Scale (Grit–O), and the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL-40). The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis with JASP version 0.19.3. These findings indicate that that social support had a positive effect on student engagement (β = 0.139; p = 0.006), thus, grit shows a stronger positive effect (β = 0.306; p < 0.001), and both variables simultaneously had a significant positive effect on student engagement (R² = 0.142; p < 0.001). The findings further indicate that grit contributes more strongly than social support in explaining students’ academic engagement. The implications of this study highlight the importance of character development and the establishment of contextually relevant support systems to enhance student engagement in higher education.
