Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas bagaimana Presiden Soekarno memanfaatkan musik dan tari yaitu irama lenso, sebagai strategi kebudayaan untuk menandingi dominasi musik dan budaya Barat di Indonesia pada periode 1959–1965. Dalam konteks Demokrasi Terpimpin dan ideologi Manipol-USDEK, Soekarno memandang kebudayaan sebagai alat perjuangan politik dan peneguhan identitas nasional. Musik Barat seperti rock' n roll dan dansa twist dianggap sebagai bentuk imperialisme budaya yang mengancam kepribadian bangsa, sehingga Soekarno mendorong pengembangan alternatif berbasis budaya lokal. Melalui irama lenso, Soekarno berusaha menciptakan budaya tandingan yang sesuai dengan semangat revolusi, yang tidak hanya dipopulerkan melalui media dan acara kenegaraan, tetapi juga diposisikan sebagai alat diplomasi kebudayaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah dengan pendekatan deskriptif-naratif yang mencakup heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Sumber utama berasal dari surat kabar, album musik, foto, video, dan dokumen digital. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa irama lenso bukan sekadar produk seni, tetapi merupakan manifestasi dari politik kebudayaan negara yang sarat makna ideologis. Melalui kampanye pelarangan budaya Barat dan promosi kebudayaan nasional, Soekarno membentuk wacana kebudayaan yang revolusioner dan anti-imperialis. Irama lenso menjadi simbol perlawanan kultural sekaligus ekspresi kepribadian Indonesia dalam menghadapi gelombang globalisasi budaya Barat. Kata kunci: Irama Lenso, Musik Barat, Soekarno. ***** This study discusses how President Soekarno utilized music and dance specifically irama lenso as a cultural strategy to counter the dominance of Western music and culture in Indonesia during the period of 1959–1965. Within the framework of Guided Democracy and the ideology of Manipol-USDEK, Soekarno viewed culture as an instrument of political struggle and a means to affirm national identity. Western music such as rock ’n roll and the twist dance were considered forms of cultural imperialism that threatened the nation's personality, prompting Soekarno to encourage the development of locally rooted cultural alternatives. Through irama lenso, Soekarno aimed to create a counterculture aligned with the revolutionary spirit one that was not only promoted through media and state ceremonies but also positioned as a tool of cultural diplomacy. This research applies historical methods with a descriptive-narrative approach, encompassing heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources include newspapers, music albums, photographs, videos, and digitized documents. The findings show that irama lenso was not merely an artistic product but a manifestation of the state’s cultural politics rich in ideological meaning. Through campaigns banning Western culture and promoting national arts, Soekarno constructed a revolutionary and anti-imperialist cultural discourse. Irama lenso thus became both a symbol of cultural resistance and an expression of Indonesian identity in the face of Western cultural globalization. Keywords: Irama Lenso, Soekarno, Western Music.
