Abstract

Instrumen yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data meliputi Utrecht Work Engagement Scale for Students (UWES-9S), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), dan Short Grit Scale (Grit-S). The objective of this study is to determine the effect that perceived social support exerts upon academic engagement, with grit serving as a mediating factor in doctoral program students. The research method employed is quantitative, incorporating data analysis techniques comprising descriptive and bivariate analysis using SPSS 27 version, along with multivariate path analysis utilizing Mplus software. A sample of 127 doctoral program students was obtained through purposive sampling technique. The instruments utilized for the data collection encompass the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale for Students (UWES-9S), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S). The findings indicated that the data satisfied the requisite criteria for model fit, as evidenced by a Chi-Square p-value of 0.625 > 0.05 significance level. The results further demonstrated that perceived social support exerts a direct effect on academic engagement (p-value 0.001 < 0.05), as well as grit has a significant effect on academic engagement (p-value 0.000 < 0.05). However, it showed that perceived social support did not serve as a predictor of grit (p-value 0.476 > 0.05), thereby concluding that there is no indirect effect and no role for grit in mediating the effect of perceived social support on academic engagement. The coefficient of determination value (R2) of the variables of perceived social support, grit, and gender collectively accounts for 20.8% of the variation in the academic engagement variable.
