Abstract

***** This study aims to examine the influence of emotion regulation on sadfishing behavior among social media users in emerging adulthood, moderated by dispositional embarrassability. Sadfishing is defined as an individual’s intentional act of excessively sharing stories, information, and emotional experiences to gain attention, sympathy, and ultimately social support. This research employed a quantitative method by distributing questionnaires to 251 respondents in Indonesia, using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were the Social Media Sadfishing Questionnaire (SMSQ), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire Italian Short Version (CERQ-IS), and the Susceptibility to Embarrassment Scale (SES). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression and moderated regression analysis (MRA). The results showed that the strategies of self-blame, positive refocusing, and other-blame have a positive and significant effect on sadfishing. Conversely, the refocus on planning strategy has a negative and significant effect on sadfishing. The moderating role of dispositional embarrassability was found only in the strategies of rumination and refocus on planning.
