Abstract

Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi perjalanan psikologis tokoh utama, Abbey, dalam novel The Hollow karya Jessica Verday, dengan menggunakan teori psikoanalitik Sigmund Freud dan Erik Erikson. Penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana duka yang tidak terselesaikan setelah kematian sahabatnya, Kristen, mengganggu pembentukan identitas Abbey, regulasi emosinya, serta kemampuannya untuk menjalin hubungan dengan orang lain. Teori Mourning and Melancholia dari Freud digunakan untuk mengamati pergeseran dari duka yang sehat menuju keadaan melankolia, sementara Tahap Perkembangan Psikososial Erikson, khususnya tahap Identitas vs. Kebingungan Peran dan Keintiman vs. Isolasi, digunakan untuk memahami dampak perkembangan psikologis akibat duka tersebut. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menafsirkan bagaimana tokoh-tokoh lain memengaruhi struktur kepribadian Abbey: id (Kristen dan Caspian), ego (Ben, Mrs. Maxwell, ayah dan ibu Abbey, Nikolas dan Katy, dan Bill), serta superego (ibu Abbey dan ingatan internal terhadap Kristen). Figur-figur ini mencerminkan aspek-aspek jiwa Abbey yang terfragmentasi dan menggambarkan konflik batinnya. Pada akhirnya, studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa The Hollow menyajikan kesedihan bukan hanya sebagai penderitaan emosional, tetapi juga sebagai proses psikologis kompleks yang membentuk kembali diri dari dalam. ***** This study explores the psychological journey of the main character, Abbey, in Jessica Verday’s The Hollow, using the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson. It analyses how Abbey’s unresolved grief, following the death of her best friend, Kristen, disrupts her identity formation, emotional regulation, and ability to connect with others. Freud’s theory of Mourning and Melancholia is applied to examine the transformation of Abbey’s mourning to melancholia, while Erikson’s Psychosocial Developmental Stages, specifically Identity vs. Role Confusion and Intimacy vs. Isolation, are used to evaluate the developmental impacts of her grief. Additionally, the study interprets how other characters affect Abbey’s inner psychic structures: the id (Kristen and Caspian), the ego (Ben, Mrs. Maxwell, Abbey’s father and mother, Nikolas and Katy, and Bill), and the superego (Abbey’s mother and the internalized memory of Kristen). These figures reflect the fragmented aspects of Abbey’s psyche and illustrate her internal conflict. Ultimately, this study concludes that The Hollow presents grief not only as emotional suffering but as a complex psychological process that reshapes the self from within.
