Abstract

Kata Kunci: Representasi Urban, Metropop, Sastra Populer, Fiksi Roman, Kajian Budaya Populer ***** This study critically examines the representation of urban life in Almira Bastari's metropop novel, Resign!, focusing on how character lifestyles and urban settings form its meaning. Metropop, a subgenre of popular literature, often portrays the dynamics of city life and romantic dilemmas relevant to contemporary social realities. Therefore, this research aims to thoroughly investigate how Resign! represents various aspects of urban dwellers' lives. The research employed a qualitative approach with textual analysis, based on Stuart Hall's theory of representation and popular culture studies. Data were collected from the novel's structural elements. The findings identify six characteristics of urban lifestyle: anonymity/social stratification, formal structure/power hierarchy, specialized/overworked identity, tolerance/social heterogeneity, individualism/social isolation, and hedonism. The novel ambivalently critiques toxic urban work systems while affirming the consumerist lifestyle of the upper- middle class, evidenced by symbolic consumption, global education, luxury travel, premium entertainment, and digital technology use. Ultimately, Resign! successfully captures the essence of urban culture, presenting critique and affirmation contextually within a relevant popular romance format.
