Abstract

**** Star Wars is a science fiction series that explores themes of identity, trauma, and moral conflict. Darth Maul emerges as an antagonist whose life is shaped by his hatred toward Obi-Wan Kenobi. This study aims to demonstrate how hatred is portrayed in Maul as both a narrative element and a psychological reflection by employing Charles Morris's semiotic theory, Freud's psychoanalysis, and Robert Sternberg's theory of hatred. Using qualitative textual analysis, this study decodes how signs, such as visual expressions, gestures, and dialogue, construct and communicate Maul’s hatred. The results are organized by theoretical lens: semiotic signs reveal emotional and obsession; Freud’s model shows a dominance of the id and the near absence of the superego, and Sternberg’s model identifies Maul's hatred as “cold hate”, a premeditated and persistent form of animosity. Ultimately, Maul’s hatred is not only a personal vendetta but also a symbol of unresolved inner conflict, enriching the psychological complexity of the Star Wars narrative and offering broader insight into how emotional drives shape character development in fiction.
