Abstract
***** This study aims to analyze the emotional regulation strategies demonstrated by early childhood characters in the animated episode “My Dad is Cool” from the Shimajiro series. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis method and Gross’s (1998) theory of emotion regulation, this research identifies various strategies such as situation selection, situation modification, attentional deployment, cognitive change, and response modulation employed by the child characters when dealing with emotional conflicts, especially in the context of parent-child and peer relationships. The findings reveal that cognitive change and situation modification are the most frequently used strategies, reflecting the developmental capacity of young children to adapt emotionally through cognitive processes. This study also emphasizes the importance of social support—from peers and teachers—in helping children recognize and manage their emotions. These findings support the notion that children’s media, such as animation, can serve as an educational tool for developing emotional regulation skills.
