Abstract

***** This study aims to examine the image of subaltern women and their forms of resistance in the novel Tafṣīl Thānawī by Adania Shibli through Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s postcolonial feminist approach. The novel portrays the experiences of Palestinian women under the pressure of colonial and patriarchal systems after the 1948 Nakba, particularly through the story of the murder of a Bedouin girl. Using a qualitative method and content analysis technique, the study identifies various representations of oppressed female characters and their efforts to resist. The findings reveal six portrayals of subaltern women: (1) powerless, (2) passive, (3) loss of identity, (4) striving to speak out, (5) sexually exploited within military structures, and (6) self-empowered. The forms of oppression include three categories: (1) hegemony, (2) repression, and (3) epistemic violence, while the forms of resistance are categorized into: (1) active resistance, (2) passive resistance, and (3) offer no resistance. These findings highlight the complexity of subaltern women's position in colonial and patriarchal discourse and emphasize literature’s role in voicing the marginalized.
