Abstract

***** Children with special needs have an equal right to education through the inclusive education system. However, in practice, many teachers and peers still have a negative view of children with disabilities in the school environment. This study aims to describe the perspectives and stigma of teachers and non-disabled students towards children with disabilities, especially those in the slow learner category, at the junior secondary school level in the DKI Jakarta area. This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive survey method. The results showed that in general, teachers had relatively balanced perspectives and stigmatizing tendencies, with 52% negative responses and 48% positive responses. Meanwhile, non-disabled students showed slightly more positive views, with 53% positive responses and 47% negative responses. The instrument for teachers consists of three aspects, namely: (1) personal attitude, (2) public perspective, and (3) barriers in overcoming stigma. Although 57% of teachers had a positive public perspective, different results were shown in the aspects of personal attitudes (55%) and barriers to overcoming stigma (58%) which were still in the negative category. The findings also showed that teachers' level of education influenced more positive attitudes towards children with disabilities. Based on these results, it is recommended that Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers and schools develop more inclusive service programs and collaborate with parents, communities and service providers to create a welcoming and stigma-free educational environment.
